Five Honored For “Heroic Actions”

Five citizens were honored Friday by the Ohio State Highway Patrol for their heroic actions following a one-vehicle crash on January 22, 2010, on State Route 100 in Marion County.

Jeffrey Ault, Delilah Ault, Thomas Howison, all three of Galion, Gary Blum, of Shelby and Tony Perry, of Lexington, were each presented with a Certificate of Recognition by Lt. Chuck Jones, Commander of the Patrol’s Marion Post, for their selfless actions to remove a crash victim from a burning vehicle without regard for their own safety.

On January 22, a vehicle went off the right side of the road, struck a tree and caught fire with the driver trapped inside. Delilah and Jeffrey Ault along with Thomas Howison were the first on-scene and ran to assist the driver. They tried to pry open the doors, but were unsuccessful. Delilah Ault used a fire extinguisher to diminish the flames while Jeffrey Ault, Thomas Howison, Gary Blum and Tony Perry broke a window to pull the driver to safety.

The Patrol says, if not for the swift and heroic actions of these five individuals, the driver may not have escaped from the vehicle before it became fully engulfed in flames.
