The City of Marion is staying within their budget within nearly every department even as tax revenues are down slightly. With 2010 half over, the City Council and Administration look to hammer out the budget for 2011.
As of May 31, the overall City budget is only 40.30% spent. The only department that is over budget is Civil Service which had unexpected testing for new members of the fire department to replace retiring personnel.
The City Auditor’s Office reports that tax revenues are down 1.20%. They say collections in June will show if the total tax revenues for the will be down.
Every June, the City is required to submit their preliminary budget for the next year. The Auditor’s Office says the early 2011 budget plans for a 2.5% increase for each department for personal services and other expense increase of 1%. The increase does not account for any increase in health insurance costs which they say will definitely be rising.
In an unusual announcement, the Auditor’s Office says the preliminary budget is only $548,000 out of balance. Usually at this point in the year, the out of balance amount is over $2 million.
The City of Marion will hold a budget hearing on June 28 at 7:00 pm during a special Finance Committee meeting. The preliminary budget will then be approved by the full council during their meeting at 7:30 pm that same night.
