Local Scouts Training for Backpacking Trips

Several Boy Scouts in Troop 100 completed their fifth ten mile hike on June 12 at Mohican State Park. In addition to training for large backpacking trips, the boys are working on their hiking merit badge, a required badge for the rank of Eagle Scout. Each boy are required to hike five ten mile and one twenty mile day hike along with several other requirements to earn the badge.

Troop 100 has a year round hiking schedule which each hike taking them to a different part of Ohio. It began with a ten mile hike in Prospect on New Years Day and continued with ten mile hikes at High Banks Metro Park, Cuyahoga National Park, the Buckeye Trail in Hocking Hills State Park and the hike this past weekend at Mohican State Park.

The Troop will hike the remainder of the year at Scioto Trail State Park for 10 Miles, the Buckeye Trail in Hocking Hills for 10 mile, Oak Opening Metro Park for 17 miles, the Logan trail for 20 miles and several more.

Next year the boys plan on building their skills by begin overnight backpacking trips. The future plans include a week on the Appalachian Trail and a trip to The Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.
