Sunday, June 13 at 3 p.m. the Palace’s mighty Wurlitzer organ fills the theatre as world renowned organist Dennis James accompanies the classic silent film “Girl Shy” starring Harold Lloyd.
Patrons have the opportunity to step back in time and let a silent film and organ concert provide their entertainment just as many did when the Palace Theatre first opened its doors in 1928.
Released in 1924, “Girl Shy” tells the story of a tailor’s assistant (Lloyd) from a small town. He uses his evenings to work on his book, “The Secret of Making Love,” which is a memoir based on his own fantasies. The finale has Lloyd racing in any vehicle he can find to stop a marriage.
“Girl Shy” is the fourth and final silent film of the 2009-2010 Tom Yannitell Memorial Series. Yannitell was instrumental in bringing the Wurlitzer to the Palace following its grand reopening in 1976 and remained involved with its upkeep for the remainder of his life.
Yannitell’s wife Becky shared, “Tom was so happy when working on and listening to the Wurlitzer organ. Most people never heard him play, but he was a Wurlitzer Organ expert. He located, installed (with lots of help), and maintained the Palace Organ since it was installed in 1976. This was his gift to the Palace and to Marion. His wish was that lots of people would hear it played and appreciate it as much as he did.”
