The Supreme Court of Ohio has confirmed the four cases it will hear in official session in Marion County on Wednesday, April 25, as part of its semiannual Off-Site Court Program. Oral arguments will be held before the seven Justices of the Supreme Court at 9 a.m. at the Marion County Court of Common Pleas, 100 North Main Street, in Marion.
Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor will preside and be joined by justices Paul E. Pfeifer, Evelyn Lundberg Stratton, Terrence O’Donnell, Judith Ann Lanzinger, Robert R. Cupp and Yvette McGee Brown.
The cases include: Estate of Timothy Ruther v. George Kaiser, D.O., Case No. 2011-0899 (Warren County); State v. Lindell W. Brunning, Jr., Case No. 2011-1066 (Cuyahoga County); Angel L. Horvath v. David Ish, Case No. 2011-1089 (Summit County); and Ronald Luri v. Republic Services, Inc., Case No. 2011-1120 (Cuyahoga County).

Chief Justice O’Connor said the four cases were selected for this session from among those already pending either because of their legal concepts or their proximity to Marion County.
Initiated in 1987, the Off-Site Court Program has gained national recognition as a model program for education about the judiciary. The program enhances students’ understanding of the legal system by providing an opportunity for hundreds of students to attend and observe the proceedings of the Supreme Court in person and to interact with justices, attorneys and court staff.
Schools invited to participate in Off-Site Court include Pleasant, Ridgedale, Marion Harding, Marion Catholic, Rushmore Academy, River Valley, and Elgin high schools. The students and their teachers will receive curriculum material to study before the session, including summaries of the specific cases to be argued. Local attorneys will team with educators at each participating school to explain Ohio’s judicial system and review case materials.
On the morning of April 25, students will attend a special briefing during which they may ask questions and interact with the justices. In addition, students from each school will be assigned to attend one of the oral arguments. After the assigned case has been argued, each group of students will meet with the case attorneys for a debriefing and discussion of the legal issues in the argument they just heard.
