Sheriff Tim Bailey is pleased to announce that the Marion County Sheriff’s Office was awarded five new Schlage electronic alarmed deadbolt locks from the National Sheriff’s Association’s national Neighborhood Watch program.
In honor of Neighborhood Watch’s 40th anniversary, Schlage donated hundreds of its new alarmed locks to local Neighborhood Watch programs in 40 different cities across the United States to help community residents deter potential burglaries and other criminal activity. The sheriff’s office received five of these innovative residential deadbolt locks that have an audible built-in sensor that alerts a different alarm every time the door is opened, the lock is tampered with or when forced entry is made.
Sheriff Bailey said that recent FBI statistics show that 70 percent of all home burglaries are caused by forced entry. Sheriff Bailey indicated that exterior doors should be constructed of solid wood or metal and have a reliable deadbolt lock on them that extends at least an inch into a solid door jamb.
Major Jeff Cline of the Marion County Sheriff's Office coordinates the neighborhood watch initiatives in Marion County and said that one of these locks will be given to each county watch group. Major Cline said that some of the groups are in the process of raising funds for neighborhood watch signage in their communities and other supplies needed for their group. The lock can be raffled off as a group fundraiser or simply given to someone in the community who is in need of a new lock.
Major Cline stated that this lock program is good for local residents to realize the importance of home security and lessening their risk of becoming a victim of crime.
