Marion 4th Grader Places Second in Poetry Contest

Susan Konvalinka, a fourth grader from Marion, took second place in this year’s POET Tree poetry contest with a poem about the beauty of spring.

Fourth-grade students across the Midwest sent nature-themed poems to POET for the contest, which was organized around POET’s tree-planting activities during Arbor Day.

The top five poets receive Visa gift cards as prizes.

“Thank you to all the students who submitted poems this year. It’s always amazing to me to see how much insight young people have on important issues such as our environment,” POET Senior Vice President of Communications Greg Breukelman said.

All five winning poems will be printed in the July issue of Vital magazine.

The winners are:

  • 1st place: Gavin Adams; New Bloomfield, Mo.
  • 2nd place: Susan Konvalinka; Marion, Ohio
  • 3rd place: Rebecca Gerlach; Plankinton, S.D.
  • 4th place: Brookelyn George; Ellsworth, Iowa
  • 5th place: Christian McCuen; Villisca, Iowa

Miracles of Spring by Susan Konvalinka:

Spring has given her very best;
New life has come to play.
Flowering bulbs have bloomed with zest,
And chased the snow away!

Showers have nourished each petal with care;
The sun reached out her arms;
The butterflies have danced in the air;
Their wings so full of charm!

Dandelions with bright, yellow smiles,
Stretched their legs out and grew.
Changing their blooms, then floating for miles,
And landing in places anew.

A gentle breeze carries the song,
Of birds in nearby nests.
Their melodies are sweet and long;
All who hear them are so blessed!

All of these miracles are special, you see;
Each one in its time and its place.
Spring is a wonder! How can it be,
So amazing and so full of grace?!?
