Wings of an Angel was formed in August 2011. The purpose and drive for Wings of an Angel comes from the personal experience with our angel in heaven who benefited from the therapies and services, says founder Heidi Ballinger. She explains that she has seen firsthand how the therapies and services are beneficial and that drives them to advocate for the children.
Ballinger says the therapies, services, and equipment WOAA will provide funding for but not limited to include:
- Equine assisted therapy – Equine assisted therapies are beneficial to gain head and trunk control. During a riding session, children are also challenged with learning activities.
- Aquatic therapy – Aquatic therapies are beneficial to the children because without gravity being a factor, the body is relaxed and weightless. When the body is relaxed and weightless, physical and occupational therapies are more effective.
- Service dogs – Service dogs help the children gain independence, a service dog can help the children with their daily activities, help pick items up the child cannot reach, and open doors.
- Kid camps – Kid camps are a time away for the children to be “typical children”. The children do not have a disability or a disease; they are kids at camps.
- Specialized equipment – Equipment such as swimming devices, tumble chairs, and high chairs.
- Funeral/Burial expenses – Funeral expenses are a sad reality for the parents of children with special needs. Life insurance companies will not cover these children which puts a huge burden on the parents. WOAA wants to help with those expenses through that tough time.
“We should remember that every child deserves a set of wings,” said Ballinger. “With your support we can help the children gain independence for a lifetime of opportunity.”
