With more people finding jobs, Ohio's unemployment rate was 7.2 percent in June, down from 7.3 percent in May, according to data released Friday morning by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS). Ohio's nonfarm wage and salary employment increased 18,400 over the month from the revised 5,157,500 in May to 5,175,900 in June.
The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in June was 419,000, down from 426,000 in May. The number of unemployed has decreased by 96,000 in the past 12 months from 515,000. The June unemployment rate for Ohio was down from 8.9 percent in June 2011.
The U.S. unemployment rate for June was 8.2 percent, unchanged from May, but down from 9.1 percent in June 2011.

Ohio's nonfarm payroll employment increased 18,400 over the month, from 5,157,500 in May to 5,175,900 in June, according to the latest business establishment survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor (Bureau of Labor Statistics) in cooperation with ODJFS.
Service-providing industries increased 10,000 over the month to 4,323,100. Job growth occurred in leisure and hospitality (+5,900), other services (+2,500), trade, transportation, and utilities (+2,400), and professional and business services (+1,500). Losses occurred in financial activities (-1,000), educational and health services (-700), information (-300), and government (-300). Goods-producing industries, at 852,800, were up 8,400 from May. Manufacturing added 4,700 jobs, construction increased 3,500, and mining and logging gained 200.
From June 2011 to June 2012, nonagricultural wage and salary employment rose by 100,000. Service-providing industries added 66,200 jobs. The most significant gains occurred in trade, transportation, and utilities (+23,500), educational and health services (+19,600), and professional and business services (+14,400). Also showing improvement were other services (+6,300), government (+2,300), information (+1,400), and leisure and hospitality (+100). Over-the-year declines were posted in financial activities (-1,400). Goods-producing industries increased 33,800. Manufacturing gained 25,000 jobs through expansion in durable goods (+21,000) and nondurable goods (+4,000). Construction added 8,300 jobs while mining and logging employment increased 500.
