Marion Police Arrest Two Murder Suspects from Other Cities

The Marion Police Department and the U.S. Marshall’s Service say they arrested two murder suspects in the past 24 hours. Neither murder took place in Marion, but investigators from Detroit and Cleveland had learned they were in the Marion area trying to avoid arrest.

On Tuesday, July 31, at approximately 5:00 pm, the Marion Police Department was contacted by the U.S. Marshall’s Office asking for help in locating a homicide suspect from Detroit, Michigan. The Marshall’s Office said Timothy M. Sanders of Detroit was wanted on a homicide warrant after being the alleged shooter in a weekend homicide that occurred in Detroit. U.S. Marshalls say they obtained information that Sanders was to be in the Marion area.

After several hours of investigation US Marshalls and Marion Police Department officers converged on a North State Street residence. Sanders was found in the residence and arrested without incident before being taken to the Multi-County Jail. A fugitive from justice complaint was then filed on Sanders and he is awaiting extradition back to Michigan.

Approximately 12 hours later, the Marion Police Department was contacted by the Cleveland Police Department Homicide Squad who said they were investigating a weekend shooting in which a 14-year-old female was killed. Cleveland investigators say they had learned that the suspect in this shooting, Latiss Irons of Cleveland, was possibly in the Marion area. Local officials say they soon discovered a possible address and officers from the Marion Police Department converged on 977 Paula Drive. After only a few moments Irons was located in the residence and arrested without incident.

“This is a first in my 25 years that two homicide suspects were arrested for other agencies in such a short amount of time,” stated Marion Police Department Major Bill Collins.
