Elgin Community Invited to Be a Part of History

The field across the street from the current Elgin high school is changing quickly as work on the new Elgin K-12 campus progresses smoothly. Marking an important landmark in the construction, Superintendent Bruce Gast, the Board of Education, and Turner Construction is inviting the Elgin community to sign the final beams and attend the topping off ceremony.

The Elgin community is invited to sign the final steel beams before they are placed in the new K-12 building. School officials would like to have as many Elgin students, staff, and community members as possible partake in this memorable signing.

You can stop by one of the schools on the dates below and be a part of this historical event. The beams will be at the schools all day and throughout the evening.

  • Elgin South Elementary and Junior High School
    Monday, October 1
  • Elgin West Elementary and High School
    Tuesday, October 2

If you would like more information on the signing, contact any of the Elgin schools.

For those who have long envisioned the new school, officials say the upcoming “Topping Off Ceremony” will be a true milestone.

At 1:30 p.m., Friday, October 12, Elgin will celebrate the completion of the steelwork comprising the framework of the building with a topping off ceremony. This marks the end of the framework phase of this project and moves the district closer to the goal of welcoming students and staff to a new campus.

Those attending will witness the raising of the two steel beams that were signed by staff, students, and community members.

“A K-12 campus is the first of its kind for Marion County,” said Bruce Gast, Elgin Schools Superintendent. “It’s important we celebrate this milestone in the school’s structure with a public event where we can literally watch the facility under construction. I invite you to join us at the construction site on Friday.”

Those attending are asked to park in the current high school parking lot and walk over to the new school.
