Event Allows You to Travel to the War of 1812

You can experience what living in America, and Marion, was like 200 years ago on September 22 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. The Marion County Historical Society will be presenting “Travel Thru Time: The War of 1812 and More”, a day of living history at Sawyer Ludwig Park in Marion. The event will provide a sketch of 18th and early 19th century frontier life from artisans, musicians and merchants to Woodland Indians and militiamen.

“It is an exciting day full of living history including a War of 1812 re-enactment and hands-on experiences designed to take visitors back to the days when Ohio was still a wild, rough and dangerous place,” explained MCHS Director Gale Martin.

With an emphasis on what life was like in the early days of Ohio’s history, Martin says visitors will be transported back to the frontier.  Here they find re-enactors aplenty with real working muskets, craftspeople such as broom makers, weavers and blacksmiths, an historic event replay, and much more. Visitors will experience pounding corn into cornmeal, learn how to throw a tomahawk or make rope the way our ancestors did. Visitors can also become immersed while watching “Drake’s Defeat” in the woods, and then enjoy some old time music.

Everything during this event is free.

“Events like this are becoming more important as schools either dilute or eliminate local and state history from school curriculums,” stated Martin. “Quality events like this, where we work hard at accuracy and authenticity, help our children learn about their heritage.”
