Ohio Unemployment Down with Fewer Employed

Ohio’s unemployment rate was 7.0 percent in September, down from 7.2 percent in August, according to data released this morning by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS). The rate improvement came as Ohio’s nonfarm wage and salary employment decreased 12,800 over the month from the revised 5,190,000 in August to 5,177,200 in September.

The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in September was 406,000, down from 413,000 in August. Even with fewer jobs in September, the number of unemployed has still decreased by 91,000 in the past 12 months from 497,000. The September unemployment rate for Ohio was down from 8.6 percent in September 2011.

The U.S. unemployment rate for September was 7.8 percent, down from 8.1 percent in August, and down from 9.0 percent in September 2011.

Ohio’s nonfarm payroll employment decreased 12,800 over the month, from 5,190,000 in August to 5,177,200 in September, according to the latest business establishment survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor (Bureau of Labor Statistics) in cooperation with ODJFS.

Goods-producing industries, at 846,500, were down 8,100 from August. Manufacturing and construction lost 6,400 and 1,700 jobs respectively. Mining and logging remained constant over the month. The service-provider sector declined 4,700 over the month to 4,330,700. Job losses occurred in educational and health services (-3,900), government (-1,400), leisure and hospitality (-700), financial activities (-400), and other services (-200) Gains were seen in professional and business services (+1,500), information (+300), and trade, transportation, and utilities (+100).

From September 2011 to September 2012, nonagricultural wage and salary employment rose by 88,700. Service-providing industries added 71,600 jobs. The most significant gains occurred in educational and health services (+21,900), trade, transportation and utilities (+19,700), professional and business services (+15,200) and leisure and hospitality (+10,500). Also showing improvement were other services (+7,800), financial activities (+2,800), and information (+100). Over-the-year declines were posted in government (-6,400). Goods-producing industries increased 17,100. Manufacturing gained 16,300 jobs through increases in durable goods (+11,800) and nondurable goods (+4,500). Construction added 1,000 jobs. Mining and logging employment decreased 200.
