Open House Set for Romine’s 97th Birthday

Trella Romine will welcome family and friends to celebrate her 97th birthday on Sunday, November 4 from 1:00 to 4:00 P.M at Terradise, her home at 1536 Whetstone River Road North, southwest of Caledonia, Ohio.

Trella is a native of Marion, the daughter of Ray and Ivaloo Hemmerly. She graduated from Harding High School in 1933. She was employed at the H. C. Godman Shoe Manufacturing Company in Columbus before her marriage to Walter Haldeman in 1938. He is deceased. Their children are Kathi Sands of Henderson, Nevada and David Haldeman of Cincinnati. She was the proprietor of Hemmerly’s Flowers and Gifts in Marion until her retirement in 1982.

In 1953 she married Ray Romine and he died on August 24, 1954. They built their home on eighteen acres along the banks of the Whetstone River. Twelve acres of this is now the Terradise Nature Preserve of Marion County Parks District.

Trella was a founding and charter member of the Marion County Historical Society. She has served as president and secretary and is now an honorary trustee.  Her other memberships include the Marion Garden Club, Friends of Prairie Parks, the Edward Huber Memorial Association, and the Ohio Historical Alliance of the Ohio Historical Society.

She has published “Day Before Yesterday” a compilation of columns on local history published in the Marion Star.  She recently published her memoires, “My Not So Ordinary Life.”
