Engineering Contract Approved for New Road, Subdivision will get Sidewalks

During their meetings this week, the Marion County Commissioners approved a contract for engineering services to build a road through the Marion Campus, a plan to build sidewalks within a subdivision, a contract for plowing, and more funding for the Coroner’s Office.

Marion County Engineer Brad Irons requested that the Commissioners approve an agreement with American Structurepoint, Inc., to perform design, engineering, and administration work for the University Drive Campus Extension Project. The contract is not to exceed $340,000.

“It’s been a long time coming to this day,” said Irons, explaining this is just the first in a series of contracts that will need to be approved. The road will cut through the west side of the college campuses on Mt. Vernon Avenue and will connect State Route 95 with State Route 529.

The project, which will also re-align the intersection of State Route 529 and Richland Road, will be paid for through gas tax funds along with support from the State of Ohio.

Commissioners also approved the construction of sidewalks within the Bayhill subdivision. According to the Engineer’s Department, the original owner of the subdivision project went bankrupt, but had paid a bond to ensure the completion of the sidewalks as required by the County.

That bond will pay the $43,200 cost of the project which will be completed by J.M. Concrete LLC. In addition to the sidewalks, curbs and gutters will also be installed.

Commissioner Ken Stiverson said the Marion County Coroner’s Office required additional funding for the year due to a higher than expected amount of autopsies. He said three more were submitted this week and each autopsy, which takes place in Franklin County, costs the County over $1,100. The Commissioners this week approved an additional $12,500 in funding.

The Commissioners also approved a new contract for plowing and snow removal for various County properties. The contract was awarded to Professional Pavement Services of Waldo. The contract is for the next two seasons.

The Marion County Commissioners meet in open session every Tuesday and Thursday at 9:00am in the Marion County Building.
