The unemployment rate for Marion County dropped again in October to 6.8 percent from 7.1 percent in September. That rate is the lowest for Marion County since May of 2008 and is over 2 percent lower than a year ago when it stood at 9.0 percent.
While some rate drops are due to people who have stopped looking for work, this decrease comes with a larger available workforce and more of those people finding jobs. In October 2012, the available workforce was 29,700 with 27,700 employed. That equaled 200 more in the workforce and 300 more people employed compared with September 2012.
Marion County’s unemployment rate still lags behind most of the surrounding counties. Delaware remains one of the lowest rates in the state at 4.5 percent, but only one surrounding county is higher than Marion and that is Crawford County at 8.3 percent.

The statewide unemployment rate was 6.9 percent in October, down from 7.1 percent in September. Ohio’s nonfarm wage and salary employment increased 13,900 over the month from the revised 5,178,000 in September to 5,191,900 in October.
The U.S. unemployment rate for October was 7.9 percent, up from 7.8 percent in September, and down from 8.9 percent in October 2011.
