Puppy mills will be leashed if Ohio lawmakers act this week on a bill to enact licensing requirements for dog breeders.
The bill, which would establish standards of care for large-scale dog breeding operations, is one of dozens of issues getting an airing this week during a full slate of legislative hearings in Columbus.
Supporters of the puppy mill bill have long argued that weak regulations in Ohio have resulted in breeding operations that keep dogs in cramped conditions and allow dogs with diseases and genetic disorders to be sold.
The legislation is scheduled to be voted out of a House committee Tuesday and is expected to head to the House floor for possible approval Wednesday.
It already has passed the Senate, but because last-minute changes to the bill are expected in the House before passage, the legislation would have to circle back to the Senate for a second vote of approval.
