Salvation Army Warns of Marion Scam

Salvation ArmyThe Salvation Army in Marion says they were made aware this week of at least one person approaching Marion Neighborhood Watch groups and possibly other area representatives attempting to collect toys and cash or check donations in the name of The Salvation Army for their annual Christmas Distribution to local families in need.

Salvation Army officials say they do not have any authorized representatives soliciting in neighborhoods or by telephone for the Christmas season.

“We do not have any groups or individuals who have arranged with us to do any kind of solicitation in neighborhoods or door to door,” stated Major Paul Knickerbocker, Marion Commander. “Anyone approached for solicitations in this manner should not donate and we would ask that they contact The Salvation Army or the Marion Police Department immediately.”

There are some groups and organizations who partner with The Salvation Army for on-site collection of food, toys or clothing for the seasonal Red Kettle Campaign.  These groups will have printed material or a letter proving their affiliation with the charity.  Anyone in doubt is encouraged to make their donations directly to The Salvation Army.

“The Salvation Army never authorizes any other entity to collect money or checks on their behalf,” said Major Knickerbocker. “Those interested in giving should put their donation in an area Red Kettle, or send it directly to The Salvation Army office.”

“In this season of Giving, there are many who are in need and many more who are willing to help,” he said, “we want to be sure that their generosity goes to the right place, and as always, The Salvation Army strives to get the most good out of every donation that is entrusted to us.”
