At the 39th Annual Harding Day Dinner held on March 1, 2013, the Marion County Republican Party named Marden Watts the 2012 Republican of the Year. U.S. Senator Rob Portman was the keynote speaker at the event, and was joined by Congressman Pat Tiberi, Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted, Ohio Supreme Court Justices Sharon Kennedy and Judith French, State Senator Dave Burke, and Ohio House members Jeff McClain and Dorothy Pelanda.
Marden has been on the team of the Marion County Engineer’s Department for 25 years as an Administrator for two Republican Engineers, working with the current Engineer Brad Irons. He has been a member of the Central and Executive Committee since 1988 and is the current Treasurer. He has also served as the Secretary and 2nd Vice Chairman, and was the treasurer for the Marion County GOP Club.
After leaving the United States Marine Corp in 1983, Marden moved back to Marion and was employed as an accountant for a local CPA firm, a warehouse man for a local company, and worked as an accountant for the State of Ohio. He was the treasurer for the local homeless shelter and is on the Marion City Board of Zoning Appeals.
He is married to June and has two adult daughters, two grandsons and a granddaughter. He has a Bachelors of Science degree from the Ohio State University. He loves spending his time with his granddaughter, fishing and hiking with his grandson, and is looking forward to meeting his 2nd grandson due the first of May.
