Quartet Showing this Weekend at the Marion Palace Theatre

The Marion Palace Theatre will show the motion-picture, Quartet on Friday, April 12 & Sunday, April 14. The directorial debut of Dustin Hoffman, Quartet is a British comedy-drama film based on the play of the same title by Ronald Harwood,

The film takes place at Beecham House, a British retirement home where retired opera singers Cissy (Pauline Collins), Reginald (Tom Courtenay) and Wilf (Billy Connolly) live. The three old friends are formerly part of a quartet.  The trio takes pride in performing in an annual gala concert to celebrate composer Giuseppe Verdi’s birthday. But when Jean (Maggie Smith), the fourth member of their original group arrives at the seniors’ home, things get problematic. Jean’s subsequent career as a star soloist, and the ego that accompanied it, split up their long friendship and ended her marriage to Reggie, who takes the news of her arrival particularly hard.  Old rivalries, theatrical temperaments and drama arise from her arrival and it becomes unclear whether or not the show will go on.

Although the film pokes fun at old age and illustrates the fears of becoming a has-been, it’s the performances by the film’s legendary actors that make Hoffman’s endearing tale what it is. Rated PG-13 for brief strong language and suggestive humor.  Run time 98 minutes.

Quartet will play at the Marion Palace Theatre Friday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m and Sunday, April 14 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.  Tickets are $4/Adults, $3/Seniors (62 & over), $2/Children (12 and under).  For more information call the Marion Palace Theatre Box Office at 740-383-2101 or visit www.marionpalace.org.
