Area Postal Workers Collect Nearly 40,000 Pounds in Food Drive

stamp-out-hunger2Postal workers say Marion area residents really came through this year, donating nearly 40,000 pounds of edible support to the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive that was held on Saturday, May 11, 2013.  Local residents set the food out by their mailboxes and the postal workers collected it while they worked their regular routes.

“This is a great example of how to LIVE UNITED,” explained United Way of Marion County Executive Director Pam Stone.  “Living United means taking the time to think about and recognize that we each have a stake in whether or not a child is too hungry to pay attention in school.  Through this drive, we had the opportunity to join with others across our community and make a difference that affects us all.”

stamp-out-hungerOrganizers say the 39,000 pounds of non-perishable food items, a significant increase from last year, have been taken to local food banks and pantries where it will be given away to needy families in Marion. Among those receiving food were United Way partner agencies including the Marion Homeless Shelter, Mobile Meals, The Salvation Army and Turning Point.

“There’s clearly a need out there to help families who are struggling financially,” said Richard Shroats, chairman for the food drive.  “This is one way that we can all come together and help our neighbors.”
