Deadline Nears to Apply for Property Tax Break

Marion County FlagMarion County Auditor Joan Kasotis is reminding Marion County taxpayers that the deadline for applying for both real estate and manufactured home tax savings through the Homestead Program is Monday, June 3, 2013. This program provides a tax relief to homeowners who are either 65 years of age and older, or permanently disabled, and own and occupy their home as their principal place of residence.

This exemption, which takes the form of a credit on property tax bills, allows qualifying homeowners to exempt $25,000 of the market value of their home from all local property taxes.  For example, through the Homestead Exemption, a home with a market value of $100,000 would be billed as if it is worth $75,000.

The potential savings range is from $271-$459 annually, depending on the taxing district.  Local governments, including schools, are fully reimbursed from the state.

Applications are available at the Marion County Auditor’s Office or can be downloaded from the Auditor’s Web site at www.co.marion.oh.us/auditor.

If you are currently enrolled in this program, you do not need to renew annually. The auditor’s office says you will continue to receive this credit until you are specifically notified that you no longer qualify.

For more information, contact the Marion County Auditor’s Office at (740) 223-4020. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 A.M to 4:30 P.M.
