Marion Public Library Kicking Off Summer Reading Programs

2013 Summer Reading Program - Reading. Dig It!The 2013 Summer Reading Club at the Marion Public Library kicks off on Saturday, June 1 and runs through July 27. This year’s theme is “Reading. Dig it!” and kids, teens, and adults can win prizes simply for reading books.

To launch the program, the library is holding a Kick-Off Party on Saturday, June 1, at 10:30am at their main location. Those in attendance can meet Pete the Cat, make a hippie craft, enter the hippie costume contest, and win a door prize of 4 tickets to Kings Island.

The library will also hold parties at their branch locations:

  • Caledonia, June 3 at 2:00 pm
  • Prospect, June 3 at 4:00 pm
  • LaRue, June 3 at 5:00 pm

Children can sign up at the library and receive a booklet to keep track of their reading during the summer. After reading 40 books (or for 10 hours), your child(ren) will earn a prize, free food coupons, and a free book. This year children have eight weeks to complete their reading records and turn them in. Kids can even complete a second record to earn additional prizes.

Want to go ahead and get started on your reading? You can click here to print your record now.

Marion Public Library says that when children fail to read during the summer, they can return to school reading at a lower level than when they left. If your children keep reading all summer long, they can maintain their reading level. Not only that, but chances are that they will even improve their reading level.

Kids are not required to read from a particular list of books, instead they are encouraged to read the books they like. The library says pleasure reading is very important at this age.

Librarians are available to help you choose the right books for your children.

There is also a summer reading program for adults. Simply read books and submit ballots to enter drawings for prizes. Bonus ballots can be earned by attending library programs, liking the library on Facebook, and signing up for email event alerts.

In addition to the Summer Reading Program, the library is hosting dozens of activities for kids and adults.
