Are you a Golden Buckeye? That’s the question the Ohio Department of Aging is asking all Ohioans as the state celebrates Older Americans Month in May, with the theme, “Unleash Your Power: Be a Golden Buckeye!” During Older Americans Month, the state celebrates the potential of older adults and baby boomers and promotes opportunities for them to unleash the power of age.
“Golden Buckeyes live lives not defined by their age, but rather inspired by it. They choose to be respected and vital members of society and take advantage of opportunities to grow, thrive and contribute,” said Bonnie Kantor-Burman, director of the Ohio Department of Aging. “There are more than 2.3 million Ohioans age 60 or older and another two million baby boomers living in our state today and comprising more than 40 percent of our state’s total population. Imagine the potential we will unleash when these Golden Buckeyes make healthy decisions, share their knowledge and experiences, mentor others, expand their minds and more.”
Throughout the month, the department encourages Ohioans of all ages to submit brief written, photo or video essays that complete the thought “I am a Golden Buckeye and I unleash my power by…” Submissions will be accepted through May 31, 2013 via the department’s Facebook page or by mail to: Ohio Department of Aging, Attn: Communications Unit, 50 W. Broad St./9th Fl., Columbus, OH 43215-3363.
