Prospect Tax Issue Approved, for now, by One Vote

VoteThe May 7, 2013 Election Day was small, very small, with just two issues on the ballot. Residents in Prospect voted, just barely, to approve a tax replacement and increase for the village. Some voters in Marion County were able to vote on an Income Tax for Cardington-Lincoln Schools. Local voters said no to the issue, which also failed overall.

The Marion County Board of Elections says the local vote on the Cardington issue was 25 in favor and 29 against. With the Morrow County votes included, the issue failed 398 to 413.

The only issue wholly decided by Marion County voters was in Prospect. Showing that every vote really does count, the issue is currently passing 65 to 64. Just 16.3% of registered voters turned out to cast their ballot. While the current count is close, the percentage difference does not call for an automatic recount. Still, the result could change.

David Little, Director of the Marion County Board of Elections, said there were four overseas ballots requested. They had received just one as of Tuesday, but as long as ballots are postmarked on Tuesday, they will still be counted in the final vote.

The results on Tuesday are unofficial until the board meets to certify the vote. That will take place on May 22 at 4:00pm. Any overseas ballots will be included in the final count at that time.
