Did you know that hummingbirds can fly upside down or that cardinals can sing 200 songs in an hour? Kids will learn these and other facts as they have a chance to handle a bird skeleton, dissect owl pellets, and try to build a bird nest in a class taught by a mother-daughter team at Ohio State Marion’s Kids’ College.
Heidi Slagle, who is a master naturalist, will team up with her daughter, Lauren Hughes, who is a science teacher and technology specialist, to present “Getting to Know Birds of Ohio” at Ohio State Marion, June 24 to 27, 2013, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m each day.
“We believe that kids learn by doing and that learning should be fun,” Slagle stated. “We involve the kids in games and competitions, observe birds in the wild, and allow students to handle skeletons, eggs, and nests.”
While the goal of class is to have fun, students will use science activities, computer research, and mapping skills as they learn how birds survive in the wild. “This is a great opportunity to expose kids to nature and science over the summer,” Slagle added.
Kids’ College is an Ohio State Marion program offering nine classes over the course of the last two weeks in June and the second week in July. There are three classes each week to choose from, one in the morning and two in the afternoon.
