Nurses at OhioHealth Marion General Hospital are being honored with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. This international award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the “super-human efforts nurses perform every day.” The award at Marion General Hospital is co-sponsored by the Marion General Hospital Foundation.
Each quarter, a nurse is selected by a committee comprised of nursing administrators, staff nurses, and previous award winners, to receive The DAISY Award. This quarter, the award was presented to Heather Hill, medical services registered nurse.
Excerpts from Hill’s nomination, submitted by Dr. Cregg Ashcraft, state that “despite all that was going on with Heather’s patients on a particularly busy day on the nursing unit, she was as thorough in her assessment of her patients as always. She used extremely good judgment when she suggested additional testing for a patient displaying symptoms beyond those that were visible. The result was the discovery of significant injuries that could have caused increased damage and clearly made a difference for this patient.”
The DAISY Award includes a certificate that reads, “In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people.”
The honoree also receives a DAISY Award pin; a beautiful sculpture entitled, “A Healer’s Touch,” hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa; and Cinnabons, a sponsor of The DAISY Foundation, to share with co-workers.
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and their families.
“When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night,” says Bonnie Barnes, president and co-founder of The DAISY Foundation. “The kind of work the nurses at Marion General are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”
“We are proud to be among the hospitals participating in The DAISY Award program. It’s important that our nurses know their work is highly valued,” says Eric Wallis, CNO for Marion General. “The DAISY Foundation provides a way for us to recognize those extraordinary members of our nursing team.”
