Boys & Girls Club Kicking Off Afterschool Program

Boys and Girls Club of Marion CountyThe Boys & Girls Club of Marion County will kick off their annual afterschool program for the 2013-2014 school year on Tuesday, September 3. This will be the first year the programs will all be held at their new home.

The Club at 565 Oak Street will be open from 3:00pm to 7:00pm, Monday through Friday (with exceptions for some holidays), and serve youth ages Kindergarten through High School.

The Marion City Schools will bus members who are students at George Washington, Taft, Benjamin Harrison, Hayes, McKinley, and Garfield Elementary to the Club at the end of the school day. While the Boys & Girls Club is working on more transportation options, for now middle school and high school students will have to find their own way to the Club.

With the opening of their new, larger space, the Boys & Girls Club will be able to offer new programs to middle school and high school students, such as becoming junior staff to help mentor the younger students within the program. In addition the building is now home to a large teen center that includes a pool table, ping pong table, fosse ball, Wii and Xbox Kinect that will provide youth a safe, entertaining space after school.

A main focus this year will be on homework help. Daily during Power Hour, students will be split up according to grade level and focus on homework and academic enhancement activities. A great contribution is the new, large computer lab that will allow students to complete homework, strengthen education goals, and learn new skills.

The fee to be a member of the Boys & Girls Club for the 2013–2014 school year is $20. This fee can be paid in full at the time the application is submitted or a payment plan can be set up.
