The computer world of drone flight will meet the reality of real world radio control flight this Saturday, August 24, 2013 as the Marion Airfoils host their annual open house at the club’s airfield on Herr Road from 10:00am to 3:00pm. If you’ve ever flown a simulator and wanted to know what it would be like to fly a real radio control aircraft, this Saturday you will be able to do just that.

Visitors will get a chance to fly on a simulator and also try their hands at real radio control flight with the help of club members. Members will demonstrate radio control flight using various gas, nitro and electric powered aircraft, including quad-copters, helicopters, miniature aircraft and scale size radio control airplanes.

The open house is free and open to the public. The Marion Airfoils will be providing hot dogs and drinks.

The Marion Airfoils club was founded in 1971 during the infancy of the hobby. In the early days, controls had just one button that would allow a free flying model to turn to just one direction, recalled Jerry Galbreath, club member.

“Today we have complete control of all aspect of the model, from throttle, ailerons, electronic starters and even onboard video in some cases,” said Galbreath. “The latest models also have complete telemetry that will allow the ground pilot to know every aspect of the flying condition of the aircraft.”

Like any hobby, these miniature radio control aircraft can range in price from a couple hundred dollars to thousands. This Saturday, club members will demonstrate the aerobatic capabilities of their radio control model planes and helicopters and share their hobby with others.

If you or your child has thought about entering the hobby, the club urges you to attend this event and talk with members who can help you enter the hobby successfully. You are also encouraged to stop out if you currently have a radio control aircraft and need help getting it in the air.

Persons who wish to become member may do so during the open house and that membership will be good for the rest of 2013 and for all of 2014.
