Marion Unemployment Dropped in August

The unemployment rate for Marion County dropped in August 2013 to 7.4 percent, down from 7.9 percent in July 2013. While that represents a month-to-month improvement, the rate is now just even with the rate from a year ago.

The rate dip in August was entirely due to people dropping out of the available workforce. That number fell by 200 people to 29,000 with the number of individuals employed remaining steady at 26,900, leaving 2,100 people unemployed.

Counties surrounding Marion also saw decreases in their rates, including Crawford County which had a drop of nearly a full percent.

Marion’s decrease came at the same time Ohio’s unemployment rate increased slightly from 7.3 percent in August 2013, up from 7.2 percent in July. The major difference comes from the fact that the state’s rate is seasonally adjusted and the local rate is not.

Ohio’s nonfarm wage and salary employment decreased 8,200 over the month, from a revised 5,208,800 in July to 5,200,600 in August.

The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in August was 419,000, up 3,000 from 416,000 in July. The number of unemployed has increased by 9,000 in the past 12 months from 410,000. The August unemployment rate for Ohio was up from 7.2 percent in August 2012.

The U.S. unemployment rate for August was 7.3 percent, down from 7.4 percent in July and from 8.1 percent in August 2012.
