Troopers from the Marion Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating a single vehicle serious injury crash that occurred on Smeltzer Road, just north of Marion-Cardington Road in Pleasant Township, at approximately 1:20am on Sunday, September 1, 2013.
The crash involved a 2013 Hyundai Sonata driven by 35 year old Jon Gwinner of Marion.
The Patrol says preliminary investigation indicates that Gwinner was traveling northbound on Smeltzer Rd. when his vehicle went off the right side of the road, struck a large rock, spun around and struck a tree.
Gwinner was entrapped in the vehicle and was extricated by Fire and EMS personnel on scene. Gwinner was transported to the Grant Medical Center by MedFlight and is listed in serious condition. The passenger in the vehicle, Katherine Smith 27of Marion was also injured in the crash and was transported to Marion General Hospital by MedCare EMS and then later transferred to Grant Medical Center and is listed in stable condition.
The State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Pleasant Twp. Fire Department, Marion Twp. Fire Department, Marion County Sheriff’s Department and MedCare EMS.
The crash remains under investigation.
