Marion Lecture Recital Club (MLRC) will open its 2013-14 season of monthly musical programs with “Spooks, Spirits, and Phantoms: A Haunting Musical Experience!” on a Sunday, October 20, 2013 at 4:00pm at Central Christian Church, 421 Mt. Vernon Avenue in Marion.
The program, open to the public free of charge, includes:
- Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera selections – soprano Lynette Burris, baritone Gabriel Vaflor, baritone Kyle Goings and organist Angie Carbetta;
- Renaissance recorder music, “The Witches’ Second Dance” and “The Devils’ Dance” – Marion Madrigal instrumental Recorder Ensemble: Kat Whitt, Sandy Becker, Carol and Bill Becker, Ryan Swartz, Aaron Suarez, and Jo Ann Zimmerman;
- “Hist Whist”, an ee cummings poem set to music by John Duke – soprano Carol Becker; spooky xylophone selections – Dennis Witsberger.
Additional performances feature:
- “That Old Black Magic” by Harold Arlen – soprano Samantha Gregg;
- a jazz dance to “Alley Cat” by Danish composer Bent Fabric – Marion Senior Center Jazzy Ladies Peg Caserta, Nancy Eilerman, Yolly de los Reyes, Elena Sutherland, Gwen Wilson, and Jo Ann Zimmerman;
- “Defying Gravity” from Broadway musical Witches – soprano Marianne Allen;
- Macbeth Act 4 Witches scene by William Shakespeare – MLRC Readers Theater players: Bill Becker, Nan Weir, Carol Becker, Maxine Hunter, Sandy Becker, Jo Ann Zimmerman, and Kyle Goings;
- “In the Hall of the Mountain King” by Edvard Grieg – Jim Besch, piano;
- Gioacchino Rossini’s “Due Gatti” (Two Cats) – sopranos Carol Becker and Jo Ann Zimmerman.

The Marion Lecture Recital Music Club, an affiliate of both the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs and the National Federation of Music Clubs begins its 93rd year. Started in 1920, it has the distinction as one of the oldest and most active music clubs in the state. Its 47 members are dedicated to the preservation and enrichment of music in the community and the schools. The monthly programs, beginning in October and ending in May, are always open and free to the community and include performances from both its members and guest artists.
