The area’s first Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, sponsored by Tri-Rivers Career Center, is planned for this Saturday, November 2, 2013 starting at 11:00am in the parking lot of the former Marion Catholic School, 1001 Mt. Vernon Avenue in Marion. The event is part of the international men’s march to stop rape, sexual assault and gender violence.
This local event is organized by the students in the Public Safety Services program at Tri-Rivers.
Participation in the one-mile walk is free. For $10, a t-shirt and meal ticket may be purchased. There will also be raffle tickets available. All proceeds will support the cause.
The men participating are asked to bring high heel shoes to wear, according to Terry Donaugh, Public Safety Services instructor.
“This is an excellent opportunity to rally support in our community to raise awareness about the causes, effects and remedies for sexual assault and violence,” explained Donaugh. “Men, women and children are welcome to join the walk. It is a good way to get people to talk about a difficult subject.”
Sexual violence does not just affect women, according to the Walk A Mile In Her Shoes Organization. It affects the men who care about them, their families, their friends, their coworkers, and their communities.
