The Marion Sail & Power Squadron, local affiliate of the United States Power Squadrons, celebrated the induction of new officers for 2014 on Saturday, February 22.  Known officially as the Change of Watch, District Commander Larry Cole installed Commander Phil Osborne and his bridge of officers.

“We will continue to focus on our primary goal, boating education,” Commander Osborne stated, “while working hard to grow our membership of both power and sail boaters through publicity and boating education classes open to the public.” Executive Officer Ruth Wilcox added, “USPS squadrons contribute to boating safety by offering local public boating safety classes each year.”

“This year we will schedule classes on two Saturdays, April 5 and April 12 at the Marion Public Library,” explained Ruth. “If anyone is interested in joining the class, please come to the library on April 5 at 10 a.m.. We have a textbook from which you can review the lesson that you missed.”

Organized in 1914, the United States Power Squadrons is a non-profit organization dedicated to making boating safer and more enjoyable by teaching classes in seamanship, navigation and related subjects. USPS has members organized into boating groups known as squadrons across the country and in some US territories.  It is the world’s largest non-profit boating organization and has been honored by three United States presidents for its civic contributions.  Members are boaters who contribute to their communities by promoting safe boating through education.

The remaining members of Commander Osborne’s slate of officers, known as the bridge, include Ralph Behner, education officer; Don Novatny, assistant education officer; Diane Cooper, administrative officer; Sandra Novatny, secretary; and Jim Ruth, treasurer.
