Marion Unemployment Rate Down a Percent in March

The unemployment rate dropped a full percent in March 2014 to 6.3 percent, down from 7.3 in February. The rate is also well below the rate a year ago when it stood at 8.0 percent.

The rate decrease comes with 100 fewer individuals in the available workforce, but also with 300 fewer people reporting as being unemployed.

Comparing the rate from a year ago, the difference comes mostly from a drastically smaller workforce. According to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, Marion’s available workforce has dropped by 1,100 individuals over the past year. During that same time period, the number of people employed as dropped by 900.

Every county surrounding Marion also saw decreases in their unemployment rates.

The U.S. unemployment rate for March was 6.7 percent, unchanged from February, and down from 7.5 percent in March 2013.
