The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio has called on Gov. John Kasich to suspend all state executions through the end of next year because of “questionable procedures, drug shortages, and ongoing litigation.”
In a letter sent Wednesday, ACLU of Ohio leaders urged the governor to grant clemency to Arthur Tyler, a death-row inmate scheduled to die on May 28. Earlier this week, the Ohio Parole Board recommended mercy for Tyler because of questions surrounding his murder conviction in the 1980s.
The civil liberties organization also said that delaying the state’s next nine scheduled executions until 2016 would allow time for debate on Ohio’s capital punishment system.
The state’s current lethal-injection cocktail of midazolam, a sedative, and hydromorphone, a morphine derivative, adopted last fall because of a shortage of pentobarbital, has come under scrutiny after the execution of convicted murderer Dennis McGuire in January.
