ODNR Offers Tips for Responsible Boating this Season

ODNRSchool is out, and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) wants to remind Ohioans to put safety first when they boat along Ohio’s waterways during the 2014 summer season.

The last several months, Ohioans have endured a frigid winter and a wet spring and the state’s waters have been slow to warm up. Remember to always check the water temperature before paddling or boating and to dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature.

Tragically, 11 boaters have died in boating accidents so far this spring. It’s important to note that nine out of these 11 boaters were not wearing their life jackets. Time is critical when an accident occurs. Don’t waste precious time struggling to put a life jacket on in the water, put it on before you boat.

Boaters should also always remember…

Ohio law requires all children 10 and younger to wear life jackets on boats less than 18 feet while the boat is underway.

Every boat also must have a proper size and type life jacket in good serviceable condition for every person on board.

Life jackets are required by law for anyone driving or riding on a personal watercraft (PWC) or stand-up paddleboard regardless of age.

File a float plan so friends and family know where you are boating and when you are expected back.

Alcohol use should be avoided while boating. Alcohol and drugs reduce a person’s ability to make quick decisions and handle his or her watercraft in all situations. Many laws pertaining to driving under the influence are also enforced on the water when operating watercraft. ODNR’s law enforcement officers work to keep Ohio waterways, state parks and other lands safe and enjoyable for guests.
