United Way of Marion County, Scioto Shoe Mart and a host of other community partners are working to make going back to school this fall a much better experience for teachers, parents and students.
Friday, July 18, and Saturday, July 19, 2014 are being set aside for shoppers to contribute $5 in cash to the Kits for Kids School Supply Drive, and in return they receive a coupon for $10 off services or merchandise at their choice of 17 different participating local businesses.
Donations for the drive can be made at:

- Custom Creations
- Marion Flower Shop
- Rejuvenations
- Ta Die For Gourmet Cupcakes
- Visible Changes
The cash will be collected by the United Way, who will in turn purchase supplies and provide them to the local city and county schools.
As the premier sponsor of the school supply drive, Scioto Shoe Mart is hosting a kick-off event on July 18. From 11am to 7pm on Friday, shoppers will have the chance to win giveaways from Scioto Shoe Mart, Marion Flower Shop, 3 Ladies Candies, and Nathan’s Barber Shop. Let’s Read 20 will also be on hand to give away books to the first 500 children. Hungry shoppers can grab a bite at Wagner’s Pork Stand while chatting with Ted E. Bear or having their picture taken with Skechers Twinkle Toe Shoe. The Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association will also be available to fingerprint children as a way to identify them in case of emergency.
“It’s hard for low-income families to buy school supplies and sometimes good teachers step up and buy supplies themselves for their students who can’t afford them,” explained Scioto Shoe Mart owner Shannon Stark. “So, this is a way to help teachers, too.”
“Education is one of United Way’s priorities,” explained United Way of Marion County Executive, Director Pam Stone. “And one of the best ways we can help schools and parents is to provide access to those things children need to learn and be successful, like school supplies, volunteer reading mentors and books. Working with strong community partners like Scioto Shoe Mart just makes the effort even more community centered.”
