Troopers from the Marion Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating a two vehicle fatal crash that occurred on August 6, 2014 at approximately 1:02 pm on State Route 309 at State Route 100 in Tully Township in Marion County.
The crash involved a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu driven by George T. Fetch, 86, of Mansfield. The second vehicle was a 1999 Freightliner FL80 dump truck driven by Larry J. Steinhilber, 65, of Galion.
The Patrol said the Chevrolet was southbound on State Route 100 approaching State Route 309. The Freightliner was eastbound on State Route 309 approaching State Route 100. Investigators said the Chevrolet failed to stop at a stop sign and was struck by the Freightliner. The Freightliner pushed both vehicles off the right side of the roadway.
Fetch was taken to Galion Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Steinhilber was not injured.
Investigators said that Fetch was not wearing a seatbelt while Steinhilber was wearing his.
The State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by Morrow County Sheriff’s Department, First Consolidated Fire, Iberia Volunteer Fire, and Morrow County EMS.
The crash remains under investigation and toxicology results are pending.
