This Labor Day weekend, there was an increase in Patrol enforcement and a decrease in traffic crash fatalities. Eleven fatal crashes resulted in 11 deaths during the reporting period of midnight on Friday, August 29 through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, September 1, 2014 compared to 16 fatalities during the four-day period in 2013.
Troopers increased enforcement for OVI, safety belts and drugs. Troopers arrested 804 people for OVI, an increase of 4.3 percent. Safety belt enforcement increased by 9.6 percent, and drug arrests increased by 31 percent.
The patrol reported 848 “incidents” in Marion County.
“Ohio’s troopers were out in full force this holiday weekend, and lives were undoubtedly saved because of it,” said Colonel Paul A. Pride, Patrol Superintendent. “We will continue to work hard at keeping Ohio’s roadways safe so that fewer senseless tragedies occur.”
Overall enforcement was up over five percent, with troopers stopping more than 35,000 vehicles in which a citation was issued.
