Candidates Night Debate Set for Tuesday at New Location

League of Women Voters (LWV) of Marion will hold a Candidates’ Night (CN) Debate Tuesday, October 21, 7:30 p.m. at the WWGH (Warren G. Harding) 107.1 FM radio station, 1421 Marion Waldo Road (inside Marion Centre). This year’s participants are the contested local candidates running for office.

  • Contested candidates for Marion County Commissioners are: Ken Stiverson and Robert L. Whalen.
  • Contested candidates for State Representative – 86th District are: John Allen Babik and Dorothy Pelanda.
  • Contested candidates for State Representative – 87th District are: Jeffrey Lehart and Jeff McClain.

The WWGH studio is located just inside, on the left, the main doors of the Marion Centre Mall.

Community residents are strongly encouraged to attend and should arrive for seating between 7:00 and 7:20 p.m.  The broadcast and videotaped debate will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Candidates will answer questions and participate in a debate-type forum broadcast live by WWGH, with Scott Spears, radio talk show host, serving as moderator. LWVM Co-Presidents Beth Babich and R.J. Bicking will introduce the Candidates Night program.

For audience guests who wish to submit a question to one of the candidates, League members will furnish index cards onto which the questions, one per card, may be written. League members will collect and sort the questions and submit as many of them to the moderator as is possible for the time allowed.  WWGH radio listeners may also submit questions by calling 740-383-WWGH (9944).  League will monitor the timed responses and rebuttals.

Candidates Night will be videotaped by Harding High School’s Digital Communications Department under the guidance of telecom teacher John Mullins.  Time Warner Cable will air the CN video on Channel 18 the weekend before the Tuesday, November 4 Election Day.

The newly published Marion League’s fall election Voter Guide (VG), co-sponsored by the Marion Star, contains contested candidates’ biographical information and responses to questions.  In addition to the local candidates,  the VG includes the responses of candidates for our area’s Representatives to Congress for the 4th District and the 12th District.  Candidate responses for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Auditor, Secretary of State, Treasurer and for Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court are also included.

The back page sample ballot is a helpful guide to use on Election Day.  The Voter Guide is delivered to all Marion Star subscribers; it will also be available at the Candidates Night, the Marion Public Library, and other locations around town.

On Tuesday, November 4 Election Day, the polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. To be able to vote, voters must remember to bring a document that verifies their identity and current address. Identification may include a current and valid photo identification (auto license, etc.), a military identification that shows the voter’s name and current address, or a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document, other than this reminder, or a voter registration notification that shows the voter’s name and current address.

To vote for a write-in candidate on the electronic ballot, you must select the empty oval that says “Write-In Candidate.”   When a keyboard appears on the screen, type in the write-in candidate’s name.  A voter may ask to see a list of candidates for the write-in position when the voter signs in to vote.  This list will not be shown unless the voter asks.
