University Professors to Conduct Issues Seminar at Marion Church

A panel of Cedarville University professors will engage current issues and events from a biblical worldview at a special “Bereans @ The Gate” seminar at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 26, 2014 at Central Baptist Church in Marion. The 90-minute seminar is free and open to the public.

The professors, who developed the “Bereans @ The Gate” blog site (bereansatthegate.com), post commentaries on matters of politics, economics, history, law and culture from a distinctly Christian perspective. The seminar at Central Baptist will be an extension of that blog, giving participants an opportunity to hear the professors’ views and discuss a variety of contemporary issues.

“Our faculty members care passionately about an appropriate use of Christianity in general, and biblical teaching in particular, in understanding and commenting on the times in which we find ourselves,” said  Mark Caleb Smith, Ph.D., associate professor of political science and director of the Center for Political Studies at Cedarville.

Dr. Smith, who will be one of the seminar presenters, teaches courses in American politics, constitutional law, and research methodology/data analysis at Cedarville. His primary research interest is in the field of religion and American politics. He received his doctoral degree in political science from the University of Georgia. Other panelists will include professors with backgrounds in history and economics.

Following formal remarks and discussion by the panel, members of the audience will be encouraged to offer comments and ask questions.

“We are excited to welcome these Christian academic leaders to Marion,” said Ryan Strother, lead pastor at Central Baptist. “These professors regularly provide thoughtful commentary on their blog and challenging lectures in their college classrooms.  We will get the opportunity to hear their views first-hand and will be challenged to think biblically about important issues we face in our society and our world.”
