Dayton women killed in crash on U.S. 23

The Marion Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol says a woman from Dayton was killed in a crash on U.S. 23, just north of Newmans-Cardington Road, Wednesday morning.

At 7:00am the patrol received a call of a disabled vehicle sitting in the roadway on U.S. 23 northbound, just south of the rest area. As troopers were responding to the call, an Ohio State University police officer called informing the patrol that he was stopped with a serious crash in the same area.

Upon their arrival, troopers said they found a 1995 Chevrolet S-10 facing southbound in the northbound lane along with a 2012 Nissan Morano off the east side of the road. The Chevrolet was driven by Dorothy E. Vogel, 82, of Dayton. Phillip S. Sutton, 46, of Delaware, was driving the Nissan.

The Patrol said that preliminary investigation indicates that Vogel was stopped in the right lane of U.S. 23 northbound when Sutton stuck her in the rear. Sutton’s Nissan continued off the east side of the roadway while Vogel’s vehicle spun coming to rest facing southbound in the right hand, northbound lane.

Investigators said Vogel was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was pronounced deceased by the Marion County Coroner Dr. Marc Comianos. Sutton was wearing a seat belt, suffered non-incapaciting injuries, and was treated at the scene.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by Ohio State University Police Department, Pleasant Township Fire Department, ODOT, Marion County Coroner’s Office, and MedCare Ambulance Service.

The crash remains under investigation.
