Marion, surrounding counties, see seasonal jump in unemployment rate

The unemployment rate for Marion and surrounding counties jumped in January 2015. The January jump tends to be an annual occurrence and comes with the ending of many seasonal jobs. Even the jobs powerhouse Delaware County saw an increase.

In Marion County, the rate increased from 5.3 percent in December 2014 to 6.7 percent in January. That rate is still over a percent lower than it was a year ago and with 100 more people listed in the available workforce.

Ohio’s unemployment rate was 5.1 percent in January 2015, unchanged from a revised 5.1 percent in December 2014. The difference in the state rate, which held steady, and the local rates, which went up, is that the local rates are not seasonally adjusted.

The U.S. unemployment rate for January was 5.7 percent, up from 5.6 percent in December, and down from 6.6 percent in January 2014.
