The Marion Family YMCA has announced the kickoff of their Health Chats Speaker Series will feature OhioHealth/Marion General Hospital’s Dr. Alex Purchuk on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at 9:45am. Purchuk’s chat will focus on Parkinson’s Disease.
Parkinson’s Disease is a brain disorder that is caused by a lack of the chemical messenger dopamine in the movement centers of the brain. Besides a lack of dopamine, Parkinson’s Disease can be aggravated by genetic factors, exposure to pesticides or industrial toxins and the process of aging itself.
Its three major symptoms are tremor (trembling which usually starts in one hand), rigidity in the trunk or limbs and slowness of movement. It is a progressive disorder, meaning that it typically gets worse over the years. New treatments are emerging for Parkinson’s Disease that hope to reduce symptoms.
Dr. Purchuk, MD brings vascular neurology expertise to OhioHealth/MGH and plays a key role in establishing an inpatient neurology program with strong emphasis on stroke care and management. Dr. Purchuk attended West Virginia University School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency at The Ohio State University.
Anyone is invited to join this free informational talk and to also hear about the Marion Family YMCA’s Delay the Disease exercise program for those with symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease. Delay the Disease is a fitness program designed to empower people with Parkinson’s disease by optimizing their physical function and helping to delay the progression of symptoms. It is the foundation for exercise classes geared specifically to counteract the movement challenges experienced by people with Parkinson’s.
