Diabetes expert to speak at Marion Family YMCA

The Marion Family YMCA has announced another Health Chat Speaker Series with OhioHealth/Marion General Hospital’s Dawn Sperling – Certified Nurse Practitioner – on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at 11:30PM. Sperling will speak about diabetes.

Sperling has been a Certified Nurse Practitioner since May of 2008.  She works in internal medicine at Marion Area Physicians (Former Smith Clinic).  Sperling has worked in various roles in health care since 1994.

Type 2 is the most common form of diabetes.  In type 2 diabetes, your body does not use insulin properly. This is called insulin resistance. At first, the pancreas makes extra insulin to make up for it. But, over time your pancreas isn’t able to keep up and can’t make enough insulin to keep your blood glucose levels normal. Type 2 is treated it with lifestyle changes, oral medications (pills), and insulin.  When glucose builds up in the blood instead of going into cells, it can cause two problems:  your cells may be starved for energy and over time, high blood glucose levels may hurt your eyes, kidneys, nerves or heart.

Sperling will discuss how to control your diabetes with healthy eating and being active, as well as oral medications or insulin to help you meet your target blood glucose levels.

Anyone is invited to join this free informational talk and to also hear about the Marion Family YMCA’s health and wellness opportunities through wellness coaching, personal training, water fitness and free land group exercise classes for members.

Preregistration is appreciated, but not required.  Call 740-725-9622 and ask for Heather Wright for any questions or to register.  The Marion Family YMCA is located at 645 Barks Road East.
