Ohio Bill would require bike helmets for those under 16

Bike riders younger than 16 would be required to wear a helmet, under new legislation introduced in the Ohio Senate this week.

Under Senate Bill 157, if a young rider is caught without a helmet, his or her parents would receive a $25 fine for a first offense and a $100 fine for each subsequent violation. The money raised would go toward a bicycle safety education fund and to help poorer Ohioans purchase bike helmets.

Bicycle rental shops would also have to provide helmets to young customers and notify them about the law. Local governments would be permitted to impose even stricter helmet rules if they wish.

The bill, introduced Tuesday by state Sen. Shannon Jones, a Cincinnati-area Republican, already has bipartisan support. However, similar helmet laws have been proposed during the past few legislative sessions without success.
