On Saturday, August 15, 2015 the Marion Family YMCA is holding their 9th annual triathlon and duathlon. Healthy living through physical activity is central to the Y’s cause and they say the triathlon/duathlon is a great way to achieve an exercise goal while having fun and building friendships.
The triathlon consists of a 500 yard swim in our indoor pool, a 12 mile bike on county roads and a 5k on city roads. The duathlon consists of a 2 mile run, a 12 mile bike on county roads and a 5k on city roads.
The cost is $25 for an individual until August 1 when the price increases to $35 and $50 for a team until August 1 when it increases to $60. All entries prior to August 1st are guaranteed a t-shirt.
Everyone that completes the triathlon and duathlon receives a medal at the finish line with the overall male and females receiving a trophy. The race is open to members and non members age 14 years old and up.
“Many individuals that want to try the race for the first time will sign up as a team”, says Heather Wright Wellness Director at the Marion Family YMCA. “One person swims, another one bikes and a third one will run. It is a great way to start doing triathlons and duathlons and a lot of fun for the teams.”
The race will be chip timed by Race Penguin to ensure accurate timing of each challenge plus transitions. Refreshments will be provided after the race and families and friends are encouraged to come out and support their loved ones participating.
“It’s always an exciting day at the Y with hundreds of participants, volunteers and spectators” says Wright. “Many of the volunteers get inspired by the athletes and decide to compete themselves the following year. I am always looking for people willing to come out and help with lap counting or directing bikers and runners. The Marion City Police Department, Marion County Sheriff Department, Highway Patrol, First Consolidated Pleasant Township Fire Department and the CPAA all help with traffic control, but it still requires a lot of bodies on the roads helping the participants along the routes. Barks Road is very busy and the Triathlon takes it partially down to one lane for that morning.”
The 2015 Triathlon/Duathlon is partially sponsored by OhioHealth and Scharer Investment Consultants.
