‘The Real Boardwalk Empire’ reveals shadowy stories of Harding administration

Remember the hit HBO series Boardwalk Empire? Some of the main characters were plucked from the administration of President Warren G. Harding, but what was truth and what was fiction?

Harding Home Presidential Site researcher Jon Andersen will lead a program about some of those shady people in “The Real Boardwalk Empire” at 7 p.m. August 13, 2015 in the large tent on the Harding Home grounds. Ice cream, toppings and beverages will round out the evening.

Admission is $12 at the door, but Friends of the Harding Home or Ohio History Connection members can pay $10. Buy tickets in advance at the Harding Home and pay $10 and $8, accordingly.

“This program delves into some real questionable people in the middle and on the fringes of the Harding Administration,” Harding Home Site Manager Sherry Hall said. “Jon will do a great job of getting to the real stories of Attorney General Harry Daugherty, his sidekick Jess Smith, unscrupulous Gaston Means (who made up the story of Florence Harding poisoning her husband), and mysterious Howard Manington.”

Hall said that in addition to traditional research, Andersen spent a lot of time in Washington Court House, home base for Daugherty and Smith, visited Daugherty’s “shack” at Deer Creek State Park and traipsed through several cemeteries.

“He literally left no stone unturned,” Hall said, “and that investigative work will pay off for our audience.”
