Heavier traffic during the Labor Day holiday results in a greater risk of traffic crashes. To keep Ohio roadways safe, the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) will be out in full force this weekend looking for dangerous drivers and motorists in need. Motorists can assist in the effort by driving only when they are buckled up, sober and focused on the road.
During 2014’s four-day holiday reporting period, 12 people lost their lives on Ohio’s roadways, with 7 of those deaths involving an impaired driver. Nationwide in 2013, 38 percent of crash fatalities over the Labor Day weekend involved impaired drivers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This resulted in 161 lives lost.
“The Ohio State Highway Patrol takes the crime of impaired driving very seriously,” said Colonel Paul A. Pride, Patrol superintendent. “All motorists believe a tragedy will never happen to them, but nobody is immune. Protect yourself, your passengers and others on the road by making smart choices and planning a safe ride home.”
As we approach this busy travel holiday, OSHP cannot overemphasize the need for those smart choices. There have been nearly 20 percent more people killed on Ohio roadways this year compared to last. We need your help in turning this deadly trend and ensuring a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend.
The 2015 Labor Day weekend reporting period begins Friday, September 4 at 12 a.m. and ends Monday, September 7 at 11:59 pm. OSHP will be reporting statewide, provisional fatalities each morning on Facebook, Twitter and statepatrol.ohio.gov.
Motorists are encouraged to continue using #677 to report impaired drivers and drug activity.
